- Harpers Ferry. Located in the eastern panhandle, Harper’s Ferry is a quaint historic town. The National Historical Park has Civil War battlefields, campsites, John Brown’s Fort, and the John Brown Museum. John Brown led the Harpers Ferry Raid on the federal armory to free slaves. The Raid was an important precursor to the Civil War.
- Washington Heritage Trail. The Trail is a 136-mile scenic byway tracing the areas in West Virginia that George Washington and his family frequented. Washington surveyed much of what became West Virginia and very likely was in parts of Monongalia County.
- Fort Ashby. Located in Mineral County, the Fort gives you a glimpse what life was like in the Colonial era. The Fort was built in 1755 under the orders of Colonel George Washington during the French and Indian War. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Prickett’s Fort. Located north of Fairmont, now known as Prickett's Fort State Park.
- Berkeley Springs. Natural warm springs that were enjoyed by Native Americans and early explorers and settlers. Thomas Jefferson showed the springs on a map he drew in 1747. Washington was a frequent visitor from 1748-1760’s. The springs are still warm and worth a visit.
- Cass Scenic Railroad. Enjoy a historic rail experience from the 1800s, located in Cass on the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad in Romney, now known as the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park.
